Become a Library Volunteer

The Hayner Public Library District is a tremendous asset to the community and surrounding area. It is also a wonderful place to make your contribution as a library volunteer. Whether you volunteer weekly or monthly or for special projects, we welcome your time and talents in one of our three library locations.

As a valued member of the volunteer team, you will play an essential role as a partner in the library's mission of "providing resources to lifelong learners." You will enjoy knowing that you are contributing your time to one of Illinois's best public libraries.

A variety of tasks are available for library volunteers, whether you are a teen or senior citizen. We welcome volunteers age 12 and older to assist us in all areas of the library:

  • Adopt-a-Shelf
  • Acquisitions Assistant
  • Book Detective
  • Book Reviewer
  • Children's Areas
  • Community Service
  • Delivery Service
  • Delivery Service Assistant
  • DVD Examiner
  • Gardening
  • Gardening Coordinator
  • Genealogy Greeter
  • Library Greeter
  • Interlibrary Loan
  • Page Assistant
  • Scrapbooker
  • Special Projects
  • Summer Reading

We have a summer program for 10–12-year-olds to volunteer in the children's libraries and assist with the Summer Reading Program. You may pick up an application at Hayner Library at Alton Square Mall.

How to Volunteer

A volunteer application is available at the circulation and reference desks. You may also click here to view it online. Please complete this form and return it to the library, where our Volunteer Coordinator will evaluate it. A one-week minimum is required to process your application so that the library can fit your interests, experience, and availability to the needed jobs. The library schedules volunteer hours in advance; "drop-in" volunteering is unavailable.
